SCHOOL NAME: Kidane Mihret Primary School-Engal
DISTRICT: Irob
YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT: 1978 G.C.
BENEFICIARIES: 5400
A group of three parishes in England: St Pius, St Joseph, St Mary's are helping to sponsor EngalPrimary School. The school is located on the road from Zalambessa to Alitena. It is dry land surrounded by mountains and rocky which is difficult for both farming and cattle raising.
This diocesan school was established where there were no schools in the area and have contributed a lot to the community by giving formal education according to the curriculum and policy of Education of the country. Moral education is also given at all grades in all parish schools with the vision: "to establish the kingdom of God through promoting integral human development, focusing on the development of person in general body- soul."
The community appreciates the way the school educates the young with academic subjects above all its commitment and follow up to foster the spiritual and moral values of Catholic Church. The basic ideas of Christian ethics are taught and reflected in the day-to-day activities of the school. The school has been teaching and serving to promote peace, justice and love, in the community.
Some Students come from farther areas walking on foot 3 hours every day. For many years the grade level was 1-6. Upon the agreement made with the District Education Office the school is upgraded to complete primary school, i.e. 1-8 in the diocesan school building. The teachers who teach grades 5 -8 are assigned and the Woreda Education Office pays their salary.
Lack of potable water and reading room with reference books are the current problems the school is facing.
