Awo is found to the East of Dawhan, which is currently the principal town of the District.

It is situated at the top of high mountains, and it is dry, rocky and not suitable for farming. The land is eroded and degraded, and the rains are scarce and unreliable. That is why the Catholic Church had built Awo primary School in order to enable the people to make the best of the bad situation and improve the quality of life.

The diocesan school was established where there were no schools in the area and have contributed a lot to the community by giving formal education according to the curriculum and policy of Education of the country. Moral education is also given at all grades in all parish schools with the vision: "to establish the kingdom of God through promoting integral human development, focusing on the development of person in general body- soul."

The community appreciates the way the school educates the young with academic subjects and above all its commitment and follow up to foster the spiritual and moral values of Catholic Church. The basic ideas of Christian ethics are taught and reflected in the day-to-day activities of the school children. The school has been teaching and serving to promote peace, justice and love, in the community.

Before the establishment of the school in Awo children of the poor family used to walk a long distance to Alitena for their Schooling.

Saint-Michael Primary School of Awo is with grade level of 1-6. The school also gives service to the surrounding people, but there is no potable water in the school.
